Two medications are used to complete a medical abortion. Mifepristone (RU 486, Mifiprex) is a medication that blocks progesterone, the hormone necessary to maintain a pregnancy. After a consultation with the doctor, lab work to determine blood type and blood count, and a sonogram to determine how far along your pregnancy is, this medication is given orally at our office on the first day. The second medication, Misoprostol, is taken at home 24 hours later. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. Most women expel the pregnancy within 4 to 6 hours of taking this medication. Rh-negative women will also receive Rhogam.
