What is Medical Termination?

Medical Termination (RU-486 Mifipristone / Misoprostol) pills cause a spontaneous miscarriage. The first set of pills are given under doctor supervision while the second set it taken in the privacy of your own home. This method has been used in both Europe and America for the past 15 years.
After consulting with the doctor, a sonogram will be taken to ensure that you are a candidate for this procedure. A fingerstick will be done to obtain your blood type (+/-). This is done to confirm your Rh factor in order to safely administer the medication. Rh negative results will require a Rhogam injection.

Two medications are used to complete a medical abortion. Mifepristone (RU 486, Mifiprex) is a medication that blocks progesterone, the hormone necessary to maintain a pregnancy. After a consultation with the doctor, lab work to determine blood type and blood count, and a sonogram to determine how far along your pregnancy is, this medication is given orally at our office on the first day. The second medication, Misoprostol, is taken at home 24 hours later. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. Most women expel the pregnancy within 4 to 6 hours of taking this medication. Rh-negative women will also receive Rhogam.

Most women describe the process as a very heavy period with a lot of cramping. This, however, can vary greatly among patients depending on the gestational age (number of weeks pregnant) and their previous obstetrical experiences. You will have a full consultation with the doctor concerning this at the time of your visit. We also offer a 24-hour phone service to answer all of your questions.
Every woman is different in her experiences, needs, and tolerance levels. The best thing to do is review all the information thoroughly. Our staff will be able to answer most of your questions when you make your appointment. After you meet with our doctor, he may tell you if he feels that medical termination is not right for you. Most of all, be honest with yourself. Once you have all of the facts, you will be able to choose the method that is best for you.
When you come into our office for your first visit, you will be required to make an appointment for a two-week follow up. A repeat sonogram (at no additional charge) will be done at that time to make sure that the medical termination is complete and that your uterus has returned to its normal state.

The abortion pill method is extremely effective with a success rate of nearly 98%. If treatment fails, however, a surgical procedure is usually required. Therefore, if you choose the abortion pill you must be willing to have a surgical abortion if necessary.
